Editor:
I wanted to commend The Daily for their front page coverage of the 1996 Delta Tau Delta Miss Greek Pageant (Feb. 28). In the ten years of the Miss Greek Pageant, the representatives of all of the sororities have helped the Delts raise over $200,000 for the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Thank you for giving them the recognition they deserve for this fantastic event.
The Hutchinson Center is very fortunate to be the recipient of many fund-raisers sponsored by the UW Greek system. The fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta and the Delta Delta Delta sorority are two organizations that have been loyal supporters of the Hutchinson Center with annual fund-raisers. The Figi's "Hoops for Hutch," which is currently taking place, will raise $20,000 for the Center as the members run 100 continuous hours of three-man-weave around Greenlake. The Tri-Delts' annual "Spike It" volleyball tournament has raised over $100,000 for cancer research.
The support from the Greek system reaches far beyond fundraising. The Hutchinson Center relies on many fraternities and sororities for volunteers for our special events throughout the year. Members of the Greek system exhibit such qualities as excellent public speaking, strong social skills and a solid ability to work in groups, which makes them invaluable volunteers. The philanthropy that fraternity and sorority members participate in gives them a sense of compassion for those less fortunate that will stay with them long after they graduate.
Unfortunately, the negative actions of a few damage the reputation of the Greek system. Thank you for giving the Greek system recognition for their positive work on our behalf as well as the many charities in our community.
