| Alpha Gamma Delta new Miss Greek "This pageant is a culmination of the year's work for the girls," said pageant co-chair Sean Monaghan, a sophomore and Delta Tau Delta fraternity member. Organized annually by the Delta Tau Delta fraternity, the pageant contestants raised $60,000 through dinner feeds, T-shirt and wristband sales, spaghetti-eating contests and money donated from family and friends. The funds will go toward supporting research at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC). This year marks the 19th anniversary of the pageant. More than $900,000 has been donated to FHCRC since the start of Miss Greek. Pierce raised $12,000 and was named Top Fundraiser of the pageant, for which she was given another $1,000 in scholarship money. The woman from each participating house is nominated at the beginning of the year to become a Miss Greek contestant and fundraise during the months leading up to the pageant. This is the third year in a row that a member of Alpha Gamma Delta has been crowned Miss Greek. "I had a really good time," said Pierce."There's no way I could have done this without the support and help of my family and friends, and especially the girls of my sorority." The pageant was divided into four rounds: personality walk, talent competition, philanthropic address and an impromptu Q&A session. Pierce played piano and sang a self-composed song about a friend who was diagnosed with brain cancer. She was also named talent winner and won a $500 scholarship. "She's worked hard and she has a giving heart," said Sarah's father Mark Pierce. "This is a real thrill to see her achieve recognition for her caring spirit." Katie Jo Murray of Kappa Alpha Theta took second place, and Emilie Fetterley of Kappa Kappa Gamma took third. |
