| Miss Greek 1997 Daily Staff An excited crowd cheered last night as Carla Guedelhoefer, a member of Chi Omega sorority, was crowned 1997 Miss Greek in a packed Meany Hall. The Miss Greek Pageant is an event sponsored by Delta Tau Delta fraternity to benefit the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Each of the fifteen sororities at the UW selected one member to represent it in the competition. The contestants then raised funds during the last four months as the first part of the competition. In addition, Miss Greek contestants were judged in three other categories: a fashion walk, a talent segment and a speech. Five finalists were then judged on a round of impromptu questions ranging from important issues to personal influences. The fashion walk started the fierce competition between the sororities, with each house trying to cheer the loudest for its representative. The contestants sported fashions from Guess? clothing store. Everything from singing original songs to tap-dancing were displayed during the talent segment, which was judged upon three criteria: skill, creativity and entertainment. Each of the contestants had to finish the phrase "What philanthropy means to me..." for the speech portion of the competition. Sean Diven, a junior in international studies and member of Delta Tau Delta, said, "The philanthropy speeches are the best part of the competition because that is what the Miss Greek Pageant is all about." Co-chairman Jared Wood and Michael Gulmann were able to present Larry Feder of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center with a check for $62,000, which exceeded last year's total of $60,000. Kristin Roberts, a freshman in speech communications, said, "Tonight has been an evening of glitter and glamour; but as the contestants admitted themselves, it is also about the personal commitment to philanthropy." Guedelhoefer, the winner, will represent the Greek System in the Miss Seafair Pageant this spring. |
